How to disable the right click functionality on the desktop?

Today tip is very useful particularly for home users who want to protect their system default settings against unwanted changes that other users can make. For example changes in system desktop appearance, themes, and screen saver as well as other display settings. Using registry editor, you can disable the right click functionality on desktop to access the "Display Properties" dialog box and this will also prevent users to access windows explorer.

Follow the given steps to disable the right click functionality on desktop:

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

Click Start button and type regedit in Run option then press Enter for next.

Here locate the location to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with the name NoViewContextMenu (it is case sensitive), then assign number 1 in value data box.

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

But next time, if you want to enable right click functionality on desktop then simply change the value of data box or delete the NoViewContextMenu DWORD item.

Enable Multiple Instances of Windows Live Messenger for Multi Logins

The support for multi-WLM is not enabled by default, but can be easily turned on and enable with registry hack.

Run Registry Editor (regedit).
Navigate to the following registry key:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\Messenge
For 64-bit (x64) OS, go to following registry branch instead:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Live\Messenger
In the right pane, right click on any blank space, select New on context menu, and then click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Name the new registry value entry as MultipleInstances.
Modify the MultipleInstances and set its value data as 1.
Start as many Windows Live Messenger windows as you want from Start Menu.

Screen2Exe is a lightweight program that can be used to record a computer screen and save the recording as a executable which makes it easier to distribute it to other users without having to think about video formats that might or might not be installed on the other user’s computer. The program has been streamlined to make the recording process as easy as possible. It actually takes only a few clicks to create a recording of the screen.

Screen2Exe comes with the option to create a recording of the full desktop or only part of it. The only two options that are available as well before starting the recording are to include audio in the recording and to set a frame rate for it.

A click on the Start Recording button will start the recording process of the computer screen once the parameters have been set (or the default ones left untouched). The program will display a five second countdown before it starts to record the whole screen or the selected window.

A set of post-recording options are available. It is possible to save the screen recording right away to the local computer system, run a frame optimization script to remove unnecessary frames to reduce the size of the output or to open the editing options.

These basic editing options allow a user to add annotations, images, delays, mosaics, to zoom or focus, cut the clip or to optimize the frames. The screen recording can be played in the interface. Once the editing has been done the recording can be saved.

Skype 4.1 beta for Windows is out today, and it adds a few new features. Probably the biggest change is the addition of screen sharing technology. While Skype typically rolls out new features for its Windows client before adding them to Skype's other platforms, this feature has been available in Skype 2.8 beta for Mac for a while now.

When you're chatting with a Skype contact, you can now click a Share button in order stream your entire desktop or just a portion of your screen with your contact.

Skype 4.1 beta for Windows also allows you to import contacts from other services including Gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo!, AOL, and LinkedIn. You can also send contacts to other Skype users and there's a birthday reminder feature.

The update also brings some bug fixes and audio and video improvements.

Webinaria is an Open Source screen capturing software for the Microsoft Windows operating system. It comes with the possibility to record video and audio of the entire screen, a selection or the active window which can be initiated by hotkey or from the program’s interface.

Users who never worked with screen capture software before will be able to start a capturing process in less than a minute as the software program has been designed with ease of use in mind. It takes for example only a click with the mouse button to start the first screen capturing process after installation. The program comes with a few options that change and tune certain aspects of the screen capturing.

It is for example possible to record audio narration (with a connected microphone) or webcam video (with a connected webcam) together in the process. The screen capture software would combine these automatically during the capturing process.

Other available options include the selection of the sound device and webcam if multiple devices are connected to the computer system. It is furthermore possible to set the frame rate of the recording. Available framerates are 5, 10 and 15 frames per second.

I recently came upon a few articles that once again offered the computer security tip to use onscreen keyboards to defeat keyloggers. Most of these tips are suggesting to install an onscreen keylogger or make use of the default one of the operating system to defeat keyloggers while making transactions on the Internet or working with sensible data.

The theory that keyloggers can be defeated with onscreen keyboards is unfortunately a computer security myth. It is definitely true that some keyloggers, especially those that only record the keys that the user enters on the computer computer keyboard, can be defeated with onscreen keyboards.

There are however advanced keyloggers which make a screenshot of the onscreen keyboard while it visible on the computer screen and which record the mouse movements on the system. It is then a matter of simply reconstructing the mouse movement to know exactly what a user typed on a computer system.

There is only one 100% way of defeating keyloggers and that is to not use computer systems for sensitive information. That’s not always practicable and it is possible to reduce the chance that keyloggers are installed by running good antivirus programs.

Using an online desktop recorder like ScreenToaster eliminates the problem of having to install software on a computer system first before being able to record the computer screen. ScreenToaster is a free online service build with Java that can record the full desktop or just part of it by drawing a rectangular shape around the area.

The use of Java ensures that the screen recording service works on most operating systems that Java can be installed on including Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh and Linux. The recording works surprisingly well and is completely keyboard driven. Pressing [ALT S] will start the desktop recorder which will capture the entire screen. Pressing the hotkey combination again will stop the recording and display a preview of the video on the ScreenToaster website.

The alternate hotkey to record only part of the computer screen is [ALT Shift S] which lets the user draw a rectangular shape which contents will be recorded. It is possible to quit at this point which would delete the video or assign a title and description to it to store it on the ScreenToaster servers.

Links will be automatically created that can be used to open the recorded video directly in a web browser or embed it on a website. The service is currently in beta and has a few limitations. Sound for instance will not be recorded at all. There is also no way of saving the video on the computer or deleting a video that has been created before.

The developers will surely offer those features in a later build of the software. There was also no information available about maximum recording time, space per user and other limits that might be in place.

ScreenToaster is a desktop recording service which is currently in private beta. Beta keys are usually handed out quite frequently. It took no longer than two days to receive one.

6 great free cleanup utilities for Windows

Nobody likes useless junk taking up valuable hard drive space. Fortunately, there's a whole slew of good, free programs out there to help us keep things ship-shape. And yes, most of them are called [letter] + Cleaner. Here are five worth checking out.

Bleachbit (open source, installer) pictured - While it only handles file cleanup and is a comparatively large download (it's Linux and Windows compatible and runs about 8Mb with GTK), Bleachbit supports a much larger list of programs than most of the other cleaning apps. Apart from all major browsers, it also tidies up after Google Earth, Flash, Java, Second Life Viewer, Skype, Vuze, and more. Found 63.7Mb of crap files on my recently-cleaned drive.

CCleaner (freeware, portable, installer) - The most widely-known name in computer crud removal. CCleaner has a lot going for it: it's easy to use, scans quickly, cleans the registry, and also includes a lightweight Add/Remove programs alternative and startup items manager. Found 36.1Mb of junk and 20 registry issues on my machine.

Comodo System Cleaner (freeware, portable, installer) - CSC does file, registry, and privacy cleaning and also packages an autorun manager, system tweaker, and CRC checker. 32 and 64-bit versions are provided for both the portable version and installer. The installer doesn't play nice with Windows 7, but the portable version will get the job done - just double-click CSC.exe to get things started.

FCleaner (freeware, portable, installer) - Like Bleachbit, FCleaner doesn't handle registry cleanup. It does an excellent job of finding garbage files, turning up about 15% more than even Bleachbit. Also features an uninstaller, startup manager, and quick links to system tools like the command prompt, system restore, scheduled tasks, and Security Center. Found 72.7Mb of files.

Glary Utilities (freeware, portable, installer) - This one packs a whole lot more functionality into one package than the others, but it's still under a 5Mb download. In addition to scanning for files, registry issue, and broken shortcuts, Glary can also check for malware, optimize memory, edit your context menu, shred and encrypt files, and analyze drive usage. It's a must have, and totally free for personal use (and well worth paying for at the office). Found 23.4Mb worth of files and 42 registry issues.

nCleaner (freeware, installer) - In addition to cleaning files, nCleaner features a system monitor, Windows tweaker, free space shredder, and startup manager. It also supports an absolutely enormous set of plugin applications including ACDSee, ICQ, Incredimail, Kazaa, Winamp, and Windows log files. Doesn't provide an estimate on cleaning runs.

Word Reader 5.0 lets you read DOC, DOCX files without MS Office

While there are dozens of excellent word processors available for Windows, Microsoft Word is the de facto standard. Whether you have Microsoft Office and/or Word or not, odds are you have to deal with Word documents every now and again when someone sends you a file attachment. If you don't have Word, there are a number of ways to deal with those documents. Word Reader 5.0 isn't necessarily the best, but it's one of the simplest.

Basically, Word Reader will let you open and read DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, or HTML files. You can't create or edit files. Just open and read them. It handles formatting pretty well, although it seems to have issues importing some images.

Microsoft also offers a free Word 2007 viewer for Windows, but the Microsoft viewer weighs in at 25MB, while Word Reader 5.0 is just a 5MB download. So if you've got limited bandwidth, this could be the way to go.

Alternately, you could install OpenOffice.org or Abiword, or use an online office suite like Google Docs or Zoho Writer to open Word files. Or you could use online file conversion service Zamzar to convert the docs to a format you can read.

Torrent Search Engine TorrentFetcher

Several torrent applications such as uTorrent provide access to a torrent search that originates in the client software. Most launch the search on a website in the default web browser instead of displaying the search results in their own interface. TorrentFetcher, a desktop Torrent search engine, offers torrent search capabilities right from its interface. Everything that is connected to the search is handled in the software program.

The user needs to enter a search term and can optionally select a category, change the number of results and the download directory for the torrents. The interface will then be populated by search results after a short time. It will list the title, seeders, peers, the size and date of each torrent that has been found during the search.

A double-click on any search result will automatically download that torrent to the directory specified in the header of the torrent search engine. It should be noted that TorrentFetcher will not download the contents the torrent is linking but only the torrent itself. This means that it has to be used in conjunction with a Bittorrent client such as uTorrent.

It works very well with torrent clients that automatically monitor a directory for torrents and begin downloading the files automatically after finding a new torrent file in that directory.

The Software Developer does not reveal the torrent search engine that is used to populate the results. An option to reveal that information and probably even exchange that torrent search engine with another one would come in really handy. The search in its current stage seems to be concentrating on English torrents. It would also be nice if the results could be sorted by clicking on a column so that the search results could be sorted by date for example.

TorrentFetcher is a handy software program to find torrents. Adding some of the previously mentioned features would increase its reach.

Desktop Search Engine DocFetcher

DocFetcher is a document search engine that, unlike prominent desktop search engines such as Google Desktop Search or Everything, is best suited for indexing and managing document formats only. Most document types are supported starting with plain text documents to scripting languages such as html or php to Microsoft Office formats like doc and xls but also the Office 2007 variants docx and pptx plus formats of Office alternatives such as Open Office or Abiword documents.

Another difference between DocFetcher and other desktop search engines is that the former was designed to index document folders only and not an entire hard drive. This means that the initial setup of the document search engine is more time consuming as the user has to point the application to specific folders on the computer’s hard drive that contain the documents that should be indexed by the program.

The advantage of this method is that the program uses less system resources and is able to offer a better result quality. A few options are available to filter the result list. It is possible to specify a minimum and maximum file size, select some or all of the supported file types and locations that have been indexed by the desktop search tool.

Search results are displayed in the same interface with their title, size, filename, type, path, author, modification date and score that is computed by DocFetcher. A left-click on any document will load a preview of the document’s contents in a preview area in the interface which is great for accessing information of documents quickly as the search term is highlighted in the preview of the document.

DocFetcher comes as an installer or portable version for the Windows and Linux operating systems. It requires Java to be installed on the computer system.

Microsoft Office Word 2007 AutoHistory

One element that is missing in Microsoft’s Office Word 2007 program is the ability to manage document revisions. The software program comes with revision tracking features but those do not help that much once the document has been saved and closed in Word 2007. Enter AutoHistory; A Microsoft Office Word 2007 add-in that adds document revisions to Microsoft Word.

It does so by automatically creating a copy of the document whenever it is saved either by the user or by the software. The functionality becomes available immediately after installation of the Word add-in. Checking the Show / Hide History box will display a sidebar menu with all document revisions of the active document. A double-click on any of the documents will load it in a new Microsoft Word window.

A click on the Settings button opens the configuration menu where the maximum number of document revisions and the language can be configured. The default number of document revisions is unlimited but can be changed if size is of importance to the user.

AutoHistory (via Killertechtips) requires the installation of Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office system before it can be used and installed.

The Word add-in could come in handy for users who regularly work with Microsoft Word documents

Microsoft has released the security bulletin summary for June 2009 which details this month’s software and system updates. A total of ten security bulletins have been released this month which patch vulnerabilities in a variety of Microsoft products including various Microsoft Windows operating systems, Microsoft IE and Microsoft Office.

The easiest way to download and install the patches is by pointing the Internet Explorer web browser to Microsoft Update which will automatically detect and install the available patches for the computer system. Other possibilities include downloading the security patches from Microsoft Download Center from where they are available as well.

When Adobe launched its online office suite at Acrobat.com last year the site was a bit on the anemic side. Sure, it featured the slick Flash-based Buzzword word processor. But it lacked a good spreadsheet or presentations application. There's still no spreadsheet app in sight, but today Adobe added an attractive tool for viewing and editing presentations to Acrobat Labs.

Like Buzzword, Acrobat Presentations is built on Flash. It features the smooth and attractive animations you'd expect from a Flash-based application. But it's also fairly intuitive to use. At the top of the screen are a series of icons which expand into toolbars to give you access to the features you need at any given moment. The left side of the screen shows thumbnails for each slide, while the slide itself hangs out in the center for your viewing, creating, or editing pleasure. Or you can hit the Play Slideshow button in the bottom right corner if you just want to sit back and enjoy the show.

Because the application is built on Flash, the right-click button on your mouse is useless which MS Office addicts might find frustrating at first. But Acrobat Presentations does give you most of the tools you'd expect from a presentation application, plus online collaboration tools. You can share your presentations with other users and let them edit your files.

The coverage of Microsoft’s new search engine Bing was quite extensive here on Ghacks but also on many other sites on the Internet. This is going to slow down in the future but we have two articles about Bing that we would like to publish in the coming days. The first deals with 5 advanced tips that showcase some interesting features that Bing is offering but also should make working with the search engine more comfortable.

1. Remove the Bing background image

Many users think that the background image that is shown on the Bing homepage is more of a distraction than anything else. There is however a very easy way of removing the background image in the search engine to work with a barebone version without the background image. All that needs to be done is to open the Bing homepage with the following parameter:

http://www.bing.com/?rb=0

This will make the homepage show up without the background image which gets rid of the noise and can save some Kilobytes of data transfer as well.

2. IP Address lookup

Bing can lookup any IP address using an advanced parameter and display a list of domains that are hosted on that IP address. The parameter to do that is the following:

Substitute [IP Address] with a valid IP. The query IP:207.46.104.147 would for example display a list of domains hosted on that IP address.

3. Every search is available as an RSS feed

Every search on Bing is also available as an RSS feed which can be very interesting for webmasters who want to monitor their position in the search engine. The web feed will be updated whenever changes in website rankings occur. The feeds can be accessed from the web browser’s toolbars or by pointing a feed reader to the result url and appending

4. The contains parameter

The parameter contains will tell the search engine to only look for websites that contain that search term. This can lead to some interesting searches when combined with other search phrases, some examples are:

5. Display only wallpaper images

Bing’s image search has already received some praise in the past days. One interesting feature is the ability to display only wallpaper images in the image search results. This is done by searching for a term in Bing image search and clicking on the Size category in the left sidebar. It will automatically display various size filters including one called wallpaper. This will display only images that have the exact size of the computer screen resolution.

The parameters are available in the url which means users can change it to find wallpapers for other screen resolutions as well.

Choose a file to share, and FOM creates a hash-like URL for the transfer. Nothing starts moving until the receiver visits the URL and the client kicks in. Once that happens, your data is sent directly to the person at the other end. Nothing is stored on a server and transfers are fully encrypted.

Did you know that a little txt file (saved to a .bat file) can lock any folder on your Pc? Like if you wanted to hide some valuable data from somebody, you can easily do it! this text file doesn’t do the normal “hide file” but actually hides the file away even when you have the “show hidden files and folders” on the default control panel file options…

Cluster bomb technology used for seed planting

Anti War activists hate cluster bombs – mostly because they can be used to deploy anti personnel mines which don’t get picked up long after the last bullet has been fired. And when they go off, even children are victims. But can the technology be harnessed for more constructive and green purposes? Designer Hwang Jin Wook seems to think so and as such, he came up with the “Seedbomb.”

The concept is amazingly simple and represents the coolness of out of the box thinking. Instead of tiny bombs known as “bomblets” or anti personnel mines, the SeedBomb has Seed capsules aligned in a cluster configuration. Each cluster of capsules is packed into a single bomb with dozens of others and when the bomb reaches optimum altitude, the clusters are released to embed all around the impact area. Each capsule contains soil and seeds housed in a biodegradable plastic. The soil is packed with plant rich nutrients and moisture enough to allow the plant seed to germinate (the plastic canister acts as a defacto greenhouse) and grow until the plant can sustain itself. As the plant matures, the biodegradable plastic canister deteriorates until there’s nothing left.

The idea is brilliant for deploying to areas stricken by desertification or deforestation. And It’s easy to see the Forestry department using them to reseed areas that have recently fallen victim to wildfires or bark beetle infestation. But can just planting plants change an environment? Not on it’s own, but if you consider that with all the golf courses it has, that the average temperature of Palm Springs has DROPPED 20 degrees in the last 25 years, it’s worth looking at.

Apart from providing a solid foundation, that also means you can install Mint from within Windows using Mint4Win (Wubi, modified) (quick update: this is not working in the RC, but will be ready to go in the stable release).

For Windows users looking to try out a Linux distribution, Mint is a nice choice. The Gnome interface is set up Windows-style, with a taskbar along the bottom and menu button in the left-hand corner.

Apart from the obvious visual updates, Mint has introduced a few core features that have improved ease-of-use. The MintMenu system now offers a more intuitive search box (similar to the one in Vista and Windows 7). If Mint can't find an exact match for your query, it will provide suggestions. Results appear in an flash, and sugegstions are generally spot-on.

Mint Install and Update have also been improved, and they make adding applications and keeping your system current a breeze. Screenshots offer a welcome visual preview before you download - especially handy if you want to check out some the dozens of available games - including great ones like Wormux, FreeCiv, Nexuiz, and Warzone 2100.

Mint is a great distro, and the version 7RC is very enjoyable to use. Don't want to install it? Mint plays well with VirtualBox and VMware, and you can also run it as a LiveCD.

I'm enjoying the new release so far, and look forward to seeing it evolve into its final form.

Mozilla unveils Prism 1.0 beta, new website

Mozilla Prism 1.0 Beta has been released yesterday. The developers at Mozilla Labs have raised the version of Mozilla Prism to 1.0 beta. The launch was celebrated with a shiny new website. Mozilla Prism can be used to move web applications to the computer desktop. It basically displays a selected web service like any other desktop application. The update to Prism 1.0 beta adds several new features and improvements including new Api functionality, application specific settings, the ability to clear private data on demand and automatic application updates when Prism gets updated, full OS X 10.4 support plus support for SSL exceptions.

The updated version includes several new features, like tray icon and notification support, and application-specific settings such as fonts and proxies. You can also choose a custom icon in the event that you'd prefer something a little nicer looking that the site's favicon. I was, however, only able to assign a custom icon successfully with the Prism app itself, not via the Firefox addon. Not a huge problem, since you can always select a new icon from your shortcut's properties dialog.

Prism is already in use in a number of web-to-desktop applications like Yahoo's Zimbra mail client. On our in-house network (at my day job), it's a great way to simplify web interfaces for my users. Removing browser chrome elements provides a more traditional application feel their GMail inbox and helps cut down on inappropriate use.

To roll your own Prism apps, you'll need either the Firefox extension or the Prism application (which is portable). You can download both from Mozilla's getting started page.

USB 3.0: What You Need To Know About SuperSpeed USB

USB 1.0 and USB 2.0 are serial bus standards that connect devices to computer systems. Most users probably know USB from devices like external hard drives, keyboards, mice but also mobile devices which are usually connected via USB to computer systems these days. USB 2.0, also known as Hi-Speed USB, was the first upgrade to the USB standard in April 2000 which delivered faster transfer speeds. The transfer speed rose from 12 Mbit / s for USB 1.0 devices to 480 Mbit / s for USB 2.0 devices.

SuperSpeed USB, which was demonstrated for the first time in 2007 will advance the serial bus standard once again. Transfer speeds have been raised to a speed of 5 Gbit / s which improves data transfer speeds tremendously. To copy a 25 Gigabyte file USB 1.0 needed 9.03h, USB 2.0 13.09 minutes and USB 3.0 1.10 minutes. USB 3.0 receptacles are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 device plugs which basically means that computer users can still connect their USB 2.0 or USB 1.0 devices into a computer system supporting USB 3.0.

Another interesting addition to USB 3.0 are power saving features which were especially designed for mobile devices. Packet traffic is no longer being broadcasted to the USB device which reduces its power usage. Additional power saving features like idle, sleep and suspend states have been added to USB 3.0 as well. A device entering sleep mode will practically be left alone by USB 3.0 Hosts until itself initiates a device mode change. The power specs have been increased on the other hand to be able to provide devices (like external hard drives) with additional power for their operation.

First devices that make use of USB 3.0 are expected in 2009 but the main push towards USB 3.0 is expected to begin in 2010.

When coupled with Freeze, this results in what some might tout to be a comprehensive security ecosystem on their laptops that safeguards their digital lives.

So far, Freeze has proven to be a worthy servant on Windows XP and Vista-powered machines, so it remains to be seen whether it will play nice with Windows 7 or not. Nice to know you can even set the length of the proximity zone, making sure you can lock down the laptop before it even gets out of your sight.

Bluetooth View is a portable software program by one of our favorite software developers Nirsoft. It is a lightweight software program running in the background of a computer system that monitors the activity of Bluetooth devices in the vicinity. It will display various information about each detected device and can notify the current user if a new Bluetooth device has been detected.

The Bluetooth software will display information like the device name, Bluetooth address, major and minor device type plus the first and last detection time. The program can either notify the user by displaying a balloon tip in the Windows system tray or by playing a sound. Interesting for some users is the surveillance opportunity that arises as the first and last detection time are recorded. An example would be to know when family members or neighbors arrived or left.

Bluetooth View can try to connect to any detected Bluetooth device. This can be used to test the connection. No data will be transferred however and the connection will be closed automatically afterwards. The program requires a Bluetooth dongle and either Windows XP or Windows Vista. The program probably works fine under Windows 7 as well. Bluetooth View is an excellent software program for detecting Bluetooth devices.

Desktop is a Firefox add-on that's based on the same concept as Speed Dial for the Opera web browser. Both tools let you create a series of thumbnail shortcuts for frequently visited web pages that will be available every time you open a new tab.

But what makes Desktop different is that you can change the look and feel of the new tab page by dragging, dropping, and resizing thumbnails. In fact, it makes blank Firefox tabs feel a lot like the Windows desktop, which is probably why it's called Desktop.

You can also add search widgets, and folders to your blank tab layout.

The plugin is listed as an experimental Firefox add-on, which means it hasn't been tested extensively. But it seemed fairly stable with Firefox 3.0.10. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 yet.

A lot of web sites (like Download Squad, for instance) have search boxes that make it easy to find content no matter where it's hiding on the site. Some don't. Fortunately Google indexes most sites on the web, making it easy to search any web page by adding something like "site:www.example.com" into Google after your search query. Or if you're using Firefox, you can install the Search Site add-on to make things even easier.

Here's how it works. Once the extension is installed, you can highlight any text you find on any web page, right click, and select "Search Site for selection" from the context menu. The add-on will then use Google to conduct a search for that text, bringing up a list of pages that include the term you were searching for.

Search Site also adds a second search icon to the Firefox search bar. If you enter a query into the search bar and then hit the green Search Site bar instead of the default search tool, Firefox will search just the web page you're currently on, not the entire internet. You can also adjust the default search engine from the Firefox search bar to conduct your Site Searches using Google, Yahoo!, or another service.

Microsoft: Vista to be available until 2011, officially

Earlier today, Richard Francis of Microsoft Asia-Pacific stated that he wasn't sure if Vista was going to be available to OEMs following the upcoming release of Windows 7. He went on to say that it looked like updates for all Vista editions would end in April 2012.

Microsoft responded quickly with the official word: they haven't decided yet when to pull the pin on Vista. According to internal policy, operating systems are made available until at least four years after their introduction. In Vista's case, that would put the earliest date at January 2011.

Historically, Microsoft has allowed about a six month licensing overlap when a new OS is released. Pulling Vista prior to that amount of time could be a colossally bad PR move, as it would no doubt be interpreted as yet another sign that even Microsoft didn't think Vista was all that hot.

As far as Windows updates are concerned, consumer editions will stop receiving "mainstream updates" after April 10, 2012 (you'll still get security patches). Here's another small slap in the face to anyone who ponied up for Vista Ultimate: that includes you, too. Vista Business - though much less expensive to license - will be fully supported for an additional five years.

At last, Microsoft has released the much-anticipated SP2 update for Office 2007, and it's currently available from the Microsoft Download Center.

The 290Mb download includes more than 600 fixes and improvements. Two key additions include support for the Open Document formats in Word (.odt), Excel (.ods), and Powerpoint (.odp) and the option to save as PDF in all applications. In my limited testing, PDF output was very true to the Word and Excel originals.

Excel's charting mechanism has been been retooled, as has chart integration with other Office applications. Digital Inspiration notes several improvements to Outlook, including better IMAP and RSS support and faster startup, searching, and synchronization. Microsoft also touts general performance gains and better quality print output across the entire suite.

Google launches public data search, visualization features

Google has launched a cool, if somewhat limited, new feature that makes it easier to search for and visualize statistics gleaned from public data. You can search for "unemployment rate" or "population" for any area in the United States and Google will provide you with information from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau.

The results first show up in a small chart at the top of your Google results. If you click on the link you're taken to a page where you can compare data for multiple locations. For example, if you want to compare the unemployment rates for Los Angeles and New York, Google will put both cities on a graph.

Eventually Google plans to roll out access to additional data sets.

At work, I usually either use a drive imaging program to load the operating system and applications onto a machine. If I'm reformatting a customer's machine, I use WPI (Windows Post Installer) to silently install programs. At home, however, I'm a little less cautious when I reformat and often forget to back up my program installers.

Carbonite isn't a web based storage service per se. It doesn't let you watch uploaded videos or look at pictures like other services such as Box.net. But as an online backup service, Carbonite can store a lot of your data online in case your hard drive crashes or you lose your computer and you need to restore your files.

Recently Carbonite decided to make it easier for users to access their stored files from any computer through a web interface. All you have to do is login using your Carbonite ID and you can browse through all the files that have been backed up. The N310 is surely candy for the eyes. I'm not the only one who thinks that as it has won the International Design Award for its curved-design finish like a pebble. It's specifications go something like Intel Atom processor with 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, 10.1-inch LCD screen, 1.3M webcam, three USB ports and 3-in-1 multi memory slot. It also supports 802.11bg wireless LAN, HSDPA and WiBRO. Whew, that's a lot of features in this itsy-bitsy thing that weighs only 1.23kg. The colors it comes in are Turkey Blue and Red Orange in Korea and it has a battery life of 5 hours. The estimated price is somewhere between $675 and $750.

Google adds PowerPoint, Tiff viewer to Gmail

Google is bringing some of the online office technology of Google Docs to Gmail. The company added the ability to view PDF documents attached to Gmail with an online document viewer a few months ago. Now Gmail also has document viewers for PowerPoint and TIFF files.

Actually, Gmail users have been able to view PowerPoint files as slideshows for a while. But now you can view presentations using a fuller featured web interface. The new viewer makes it easier to skip pages, change the image size, and change the page layout of presentations.

The TIFF viewer works much the same way, making it easier to see multi-page TIFF images sent to your Gmail address.

However the are times where you would like to watch on the ending few seconds of a 10 minute long video.. For that you need to let the whole damn video stream in and then watch the last few seconds.. And to make matters worse imagine of you were doing that on a dial up connection.. It would take ages just for those few seconds.. So, what do you do??

The solutions is real simple.. Dont watch that video..

WOAH!! AM JUST KIDDING..

Of course we have a solution for this inconvenience.. And no you don't have to install any additional software or plug-ins.. To view a video from a specific time all you have to do is enter a snippet at the end of the video's URL and you will be able to load the video from the part u actually wanna watch..

What you have to do is just add " #t=NumberOfSeconds " at the end of the URL of the YouTube video you wanna watch and hit the " Enter " key.. You will now see that the marker would have moved to the timed position that you wanna watch and it will start the playing from the specified position..

For Eg: Suppose you wanna watch the last 25 seconds of a 10 minute video you will have to use the following snippet after the video's URL: #t=575s or if you want to skip the first 30seconds of the same 10 minute video you will have to use the following snippet= #t=31s..

So your Youtube Video URL should look something like this:
